Many of you have asked about our son Steven who was deployed to Iraq in October 2003.  We are pleased to let you know Steven returned safe and sound in the Spring of 2005.  We are also thrilled to announce that Steven was able to complete the final semester of college that was interrupted upon deployment, graduating magna cum laude from Bethel University December 16th, 2005.  His immediate plans are to submit applications for graduate school as his interest is in clinical psychology specializing in Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome.  Many of these soldiers families, studies and careers are put on hold while they serve to protect this country.  Thank you to all that support our soldiers.

October 30th, 2003.
That date will stick in our memory. That’s the day we received the call that our son was being deployed to Iraq along with his National Guard unit.

My name is Karin Lancaster. I am the Client Relations Coordinator for AHC and one of the Front Office Training Associates. Some of you will know me personally and some might recognize my name as the contact with your monthly monitors. This last year has been a roller coaster of emotions for many in our country. I know many of you also have family members, friends or close loved ones proudly serving our country in one of many branches of the military. I’m sure your family, as our family has, closely followed the events taking place.
Little did we know in 1998 when our son Steven was 17, and enlisted in the Army National Guard, that he would be asked to serve his country overseas during a world conflict. Although always a possibility, a person never thinks it will really happen. As it turns out, Steven was in his final semester before college graduation when he received the word that he would be deployed in 3 weeks, thereby requiring withdrawal from his final senior semester. As much as we like to think we control our future plans, life happens.

Thank you to all who have supported our troops, whether on foreign soil or domestic. They need and feel your support and your encouragement.

November 10, 2004  Steven's good-bye letter to his Mom & Dad

Mom & Dad

This is what has become our traditional departure letter. Please forgive the handwriting. Before I get more personal, I have a point to make. Serving in Iraq is the most honoring thing I have ever done. Everyday I awake proud to be a US soldier. I can think of no better way to live my life. Every time I see the flag or hear the anthem I stand proudly next to those who have gone before me. There are no good words to describe how deeply I love America and serving it is my greatest pleasure. Tomorrow I head back to the war zone and if the insurgents are successful and God brings me home, let nothing tarnish this idea from your heads. I marched proudly into the fate which awaits me. There is no calling higher on my heart that serving the people of America and the people of Iraq. I know you will always despise Iraq, but in my heart there is so much hope for that country. If anything happens, let the world know I have no regrets.

Your son

Steve
